Melburnians are still being slugged with exorbitant taxi fares by rogue operators, despite a law change barring drivers from turning off their meters and setting prepaid fares.

Transport advocate Rod Barton told Tony Jones, who is hosting 3AW Mornings over summer, he’s receiving “a lot of complaints” about drivers who are demanding payment far above meter fares.

“The vast majority of complaints that the taxi industry is receiving are coming from people who are operating as independents,” he said. “The government is failing to do any action on this and the consumers are losing confidence in the industry.”
