Waite explains why Shiel chose Dons over Blues

Jarrad Waite says Carlton are “still five years away” from having a crack at another flag and suggested it played a crucial role in Dylan Shiel’s decision.

Speaking after the star Giants midfielder requested a trade to Essendon and rejected the Blues offer, the former Carlton forward explained why the 25-year-old chose the Dons over his former club.

“(Essendon) are in a really good spot,” he said.

“It’s going to be a pretty formidable midfield and spine with Joe Daniher returining.

“It would’ve been gut-wrenching for Carlton – St.Kilda and Hawthorn were never really in the race. They’ll be really flat with this one.”
