What ‘irritates’ Leigh Matthews about footy’s tackle debate
Leigh Matthews has weighed into the AFL’s high-tackle debate, saying under-scrutiny young guns Jack Ginnivan and Cody Weightman have every right to make themselves as difficult as possible to tackle.
The league legend said players should “never play for a free kick which puts you out of the contest, if you don’t get the free” but there was nothing wrong with trying to win an advantage.
“(Collingwood coach) Craig McRae said the words – why should you be easy to tackle? Why shouldn’t you be hard to tackle?” he said.
“I have been irritated in recent years that so many people barrack for the tackler.”
