Tom Elliott has given three examples of former Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police Shane Patton being used as a “scapegoat” by the state government after his resignation last night.

Patton was on the 3AW Mornings program last Thursday, when he was told informally by the government that his contract would be extended, but that had all changed by the weekend with the vote of no confidence.

“Shane Patton has been made a scapegoat for the government’s own policing failures,” the 3AW Mornings host said.

Press PLAY to hear his three examples

“The blame is being laid at Shane Patton’s doorstep, it is not his fault, it is the government’s own failings,” he said.

State opposition leader Brad Battin agreed with Tom Elliott’s comments, questioning whether right now was the best time for Patton to go.

“Did he have to go right at the moment? Probably not,” Battin said on 3AW Mornings.

Press PLAY to hear his full thoughts on the situation

“I think he’s been very poorly treated for someone who’s delivered so much for our community,” he said.
